The China Motorcycle Industry Association has proposed to abandon the "one-size-fits-all" ban and limit management, and to promote the coordinated development of motorcycles and urban transportation.

Author:

Recently, the China Motorcycle Association issued opinions and suggestions to relevant departments regarding the motorcycle ban and restriction policies proposed to be continued in Huizhou and Shantou, recommending the implementation of more scientific and humane motorcycle management measures to achieve the coordinated development of motorcycles and urban traffic.

The association pointed out that managing motorcycles through restrictive measures is a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Since Beijing first introduced motorcycle restriction policies in 1985, more than thirty years have passed. The motorcycle industry has undergone tremendous changes, with motorcycle product quality reaching world-class levels. The "National IV" emission standards are stricter than those of the European Union, and advanced technologies such as ABS braking and TCS traction control are widely used. The pollution emissions and safety performance of motorcycles have greatly improved, and the main reasons for the initial ban and restrictions no longer exist. Motorcycles are widely used globally, with nearly sixty million new users added each year. Compared to cars, motorcycles have lower energy consumption and emissions, aligning with the concept of green travel. Their compact and flexible design occupies less space for driving and parking, effectively alleviating traffic congestion and meeting citizens' short-distance travel and special needs. Moreover, as motor vehicles, motorcycles require registration and a driver's license to operate, making them easier to manage.

The association believes that the motorcycle ban and restriction policy is not the correct way to solve urban traffic management issues related to motorcycles. Cities in China such as Jiangmen, Chongqing, and Xi'an have achieved good results through scientific and humane management, realizing harmonious coexistence between motorcycles and urban traffic. Motorcycles will not become a burden on urban traffic; instead, they can provide citizens with more convenient, green, and safe travel options, contributing to sustainable urban development and enhancing residents' travel satisfaction.

The association expressed its expectation to cooperate with traffic management departments to optimize management measures and leverage the beneficial supplementary role of motorcycles in urban traffic. In the future, the association will continue to pay attention to motorcycle management policies in various regions, actively promote the healthy development of the industry, advocate for safe travel, and continuously launch safer and more environmentally friendly products to contribute to the convenience of citizens' travel.
